I recently found a really cool geometric wooden bangle at our local Saver's thrift store. Sadly, there was only one,and I really wanted to try multiple styles of decorating this bangle. I turned to my current favorite resin, Amazing Casting Resin. It's low odor, dries quickly and is nicely paintable with a bit of sanding. Is used it to make a lot of different bezel settings at Christmas time and they are quite durable. A little gilder's paste on them and they took just like metal with a really nice patina.
The picture below is the mold made from Amazing Rubber Mold ( same company, awesome results, and a kind of pleasant smell, too). The piece I am holding is the cast resin piece. Releases from the mold with no need of mold release. Since the original bangle is wood, the mold picked up the wood grain and it gave the finished piece a nice texture that the paint could adhere to without sanding/texturing. The old sanding needed was a little of the edges at the top of the mold wear it was poured.

When the bangle was totally dried, I went to town with the metallic finish. I picked gold, to give the bracelet a faux patina appearance. Decorating Metralic Lustre works great, adheres quickly and can be buffed to a nice shine with a cloth.
Next, sealer added for protection and, voila!
Can't believe last Oct. was my last post. Life gets in the way sometimes.
This past weekend was one of my favorite geek related getaways...Boston Comic Con! Travelled with the boy and some friends to take in the sights. Despite having to wait over 2 hours in line to get in (can't get over how HUGE this show has become ) we had an amazing day. One if the most refreshing things is how female and family friendly these shows are becoming. So many families cosplaying together. It was great. I wish I had gotten a picture or video of the adorable dad dressed as Spiderman (sans mask, and I swear this guy could have been Andrew Garfield's twin!) walking with his little Spiderbaby (probably not even a year old yet) on his shoulders. I swear I heard about 400 girls "Awwww!!!!" at the same time!

I will share some of the pics I did get...enjoy!

Batman and Robin--loved that this little guy cosplayed as Damian

Another adorable Spider Family

I had to get a pic of these two as Phoenix and Wolverine...one of my favorite comic couples

Skyrim Cosplayers photo bombed by Where's Waldo

That Waldo is such a trouble maker!

These Valkyries were awesome!!!

This guy's costume was unbelievable up close. I have to say, of all my seasonal times off from the day job, I love my fall one the best. The sights, the colors, the aromas (pumpkin EVERYTHING) the cooler weather...it is just the best.
Plus, it is nice wind down from an extremely busy month round here. October (followed closely by June) is THE BIRTHDAY MONTH around here. Hard to believe my kiddo had his 12th birthday just last week. Since it fell on a school day this year, we had the traditional family celebration that night complete with 'Pokemon' cake.

This year his celebration choice for the following was to attend a local Renaissance Faire ,so that is what we did. Fun times and revelry were had by all (in addition to empty pockets experienced by parents. But it was worth it.)
On to today's Spotlight Feature!
Keeping in the spirit of the Halloween season, today's spotlight is on the awesome and eerie work of
LivingDeadGirlNicole
Here is a little bit about Nicole's artwork in her own words from her Etsy bio:
I find beauty in all things dark, spooky or mythical. Aspects of that are reflected not only in my style but also in my art work. When other little girls wanted to be ballerinas I wanted to be Elvira.... I still do! I'm the type of girl that if Zombies attack I want to join em not fight em. Some of my favorite things are horror movies, bats, Halloween, themed costume parties, Renaissance Faires, Muppets, Tattoos, rock music, fairy and fantasy art, Universal Monsters and The Munsters. I like to draw, paint, scrapbook, craft and do anything that gets my creative blood flowing.

One of the first things in Nicole's shop that caught my eye is that she is a talented artist. I love this portrait of Katherine Isabelle in 'Ginger Snaps'.

The last few weeks have been busy with the start of the new school year between my own classroom (I teach preschool)and my son beginning middle school and starting at a new school. Our second floor tenant moved out, leaving an apartment that needed a whole renovation before it could be rentable again.I will spare you those horror show pics.

Then, because it wasn't chaotic enough,I had shingles flare up on my face. I had always heard you could only get shingles once (my 1st episode was in July and on my side), but apparently that is NOT TRUE.I have been documenting the whole episode on my phone (the doctor loved this idea,so she could see the progression). It's been two weeks since the initial rash and it is finally starting to scab and clear, but the itch and burning discomfort remain. Maybe I will do a whole post on it someday, complete with my "Walking Dead' extra face shots, lol.

So, with a bit of sick time on my hands I have been working on few things I have been wanting to learn, such as digital drawing. Way back when I was in college, digital drawing was in it's beginning stages.Heck, the whole internet was in it's beginning stages! So, needless to say, I am a bit behind on things. I don't have the time or resources to take classes right now,but I am still a determined student. I finally found styluses I feel comfortable drawing on my Ipad with. My tools of choice are a Bamboo stylus, Nomadbrush Flex, and my favorite, the Jot Pro. I find the Jot mimics the feel of real drawing tool in my hand the best, and I love the fine point. All three work great, though.
here are some links for you interested in looking into them
I have been having a lot of fun experimenting with photography lately. I really love messing around with different apps, tints, exposures and colors.
The following pictures in the collages were taken in New Bedford on an amazing full moon night, using my Sony Experia Ion phone, and edited using Pixlr Express,Aviary,Instagram and Photo Grid.

The Con moved from the Hynes Convention Center to the the lovely seaside Seaport World Trade Center, drawing in an estimated 15,000 people. Judging from the lines we observed wrapping around the center when we arrived, I'd believe those numbers and would guess there was possibly even more than that. The Con has coming a long ways from it's initial launch in 2007, with only 900 or so attendees.

What has changed since those early con years? The media is focused on comics these days. Epic shows like 'The Walking Dead' are based on comics. Your hot movies of the summer? Last year's blockbuster was 'The Avengers',a movie comic buffs have been waiting on for years.(I know I had been waiting for an 'Avengers' feature since I was a kiddo of nine--that is a few years ago, lol). And show like 'The Big Bang Theory' show hey, it's o.k. to be a geek!

So on Saturday myself and my two fellow bff geek moms packed our three boys in to the mini-van and off we went. Yes, you read that right. It was the moms leading this outing. We were possibly more excited about it than the boys. Terry Moore of 'Strangers In Paradise' was going to be there! And George Perez! It was George Perez's work that began my lifelong obsession with comics. I was 9. I read my younger brother's copy of 'Avengers' 160. That art! And there were girl superheroes! Who was this 'Scarlet Witch'?? She was so cool. And that little panel where the Beast is reminiscing about another team and another time, and there is a small 'X-Men' picture...well, that began a whole new obsession.

I didn't get to actually meet George Perez, unfortunately, due to time constraints and a really long line at the time, but I did get to see him doing awesome sketches for folks in the line. The one I saw was a'Wolverine' head shot (hey, doesn't he have a movie out now???), I believe. That made it all the worthwhile.

I did get to meet one of my favorite writers,Steve Niles. Now there is a writer who can write stories that quiet frankly make me sleep with the lights on. I felt like a complete blithering fangirl, and apologized profusely but he was so cool. That was okay, because this was what this whole weekend was all about, he said. You know what? He is right. One of the things I like best about Boston Comic Con is it is about the fans.

Steve's table mate was none other than Terry Moore. We had the pleasure of meeting Terry at a previous Boston Comic Con, and he is always easy to talk to and VERY funny. 'Rachel Rising' is one of my favorite books right now,and if you aren't reading it, well, why not???? It was recently optioned for television and I wouldn't be suprised if it became the next hit like 'The Walking Dead'. It is scary, creepy and gorgeous all at the same time. Try it. You won't be disappointed.
You can tell how excited Deb is my the 'Italian Handwaving' in the picture with him.
Deb and I had previously met her in our 'wild and kid-free days' back in the late 90's when we traveled to the 'Small Press Expo' in Maryland (yes, you read that right, too. Two geek-girl-comic- fan adventurers travelling to far way Cons. Oh, the days of our wild and crazy youth!) Colleen was as lovely and sweet as ever, telling us about the new gorgeous remastered version of 'A Distant Soil', and that it is ending at issue 50! Another 'must try' book, people~you won't be disappointed.

It's been a hot one here this week on the east coast,we saw temps in the mid 90's all week with heat indexes in the 100's. It was a great week to be on vacation, though. The kiddo and I hit the beach, festivals, took in a few movies ('Despicable Me 2': very cute. Loved the minions.' Pacific Rim': everything a giant monster movie should be.Loved it!)
All good things must end, though and it's back to the daily grind tomorrow--hopefully with lower temperatures. What makes it bearable is the next vacation is only 28 days away :)

On to our 'Geek Girls Of Etsy' Spotlight of the day. Today we shine the light on an awesome father/daughter team,Floro Dery and Flor Dery who have combined into one awesome, artistic Etsy shop!

I have found myself checking the weather app on my phone repeatedly for any signs of rain. Nope. Nada.
Anyways,it was a good week to be on vacation. Here are some pics of the highlights of our week.
Stay cool everyone!

Ah,vacation.
We work all year to get to this point that we love. This is my 'stay at home' vacation. Kiddo is in a summer program he loves for a month,so day trips instead. My days this week are filled with relaxation, iced coffee (of course!),jewelry making, supply shopping, organizing and cleaning (which I actually do enjoy when I don't HAVE to do them). I will be hitting the annual festival at the park up the street later today. My bead vendor pal from Florida is there with her usual AWESOME selection and I am itching to do a little shopping!
We tried to go yesterday, but were drenched by downpours that came out of nowhere. According to doppler radar,it wasn't even raining in our area.Yet this was the view from where we took shelter...welcome to summer in New England...

I hope to get lots of better pictures of the festival today,if the kiddo ever gets up!

Today is a busy day at our house: cookouts, visiting, yummy food, ice cream, fireworks. Then back to work tomorrow :/
I am sitting here enjoying the morning coffee before all the festivities --today it's Green Mountain Dark Magic blend, iced with light cream and a shot of blueberry. I was so excited to find BB&B had a huge selection if 'Skinny Syrups' in a huge assortment of flavors, including blueberry. Skinny syrup will make me skinny, right? You mean that is not how it works? Oh well, at least it tastes yummy.
(if anyone knows where I can find their pumpkin spice syrup, let me know. It was the only flavor they didn't have in stock and I adore all flavors and scents pumpkin)

So as I am sitting here taking in the day, I realize I haven't done a giveaway in forever. Giveaways are a blast, and it's chance to introduce new readers to the blog and I get to chat and get feedback from some really great folks. So let's do a giveaway!

Since summer has arrived here full blast, (it's already 82 degrees here at 9:00 a.m. expected to hot the 90's and HUMID) so I decided to go with a beach/summer themed piece.
I will be giving away one 'Sea Shades Recycled Glass Necklace' to one lucky winner!

The beads are made from recycled glass, in lovely sea shades of blue and green. They are strung on brown leather with a silver toned clasp. The original listing can be seen here:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/78551086/sea-shades-recycled-glass-necklace
We don't have to get up too early(although I still seem to anyways). I can relax, sip my iced coffee, spend time having an actual conversation with my kiddo, browse the internet, work on orders for my Etsy. It's nice to not have to adhere to a schedule, especially after the busy week we have had between graduations and birthdays
.
My youngest kiddo graduated from elementary school on Monday. I am both happy and sad the same time. SO very proud of his accomplishments, but not really sure where all the years have gone? Seems like just yesterday I was dropping him off for his first day of kindergarten.

Also this week, our oldest turned 21! Her dad and I met when she was in kindergarten,so I was not there for that first day of school for her but I remember all the others. It goes by in the blink of an eye, really.
She had to work the day of her birthday (as is life in the real 'grown up' world) so we had her celebration last night. This is one of the dinner guests she invited over...

and her red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting being melted by all those candles...

So as said, BUSY week. Enjoying the opportunity to sit down right now, have a cup of iced coffee --Green Mountain Breakfast Blend with Coffee Mate 'Thin Mint' creamer via my Kuerig Vue...and yes, it is as yummy as it sounds. Even better in these cute mason tumblers I found at Walmart.

Sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee while we check out our 'Geek Girls Of Etsy' featured shop of the day. Today our spotlight falls on Wyrd and Wired!
Here is a little bit about Cynthia is her own words--

I graduated from college with a degree in studio art and a concentration in computer graphics, but quickly found that I missed getting my hands on my work. A California vacation for graduation led to a flash of inspiration, which led me to a spool of craft wire and some craft glass. Once I discovered the joy of wire wrapping, I was hooked.

My jewelry art is constantly growing and changing, but some themes will always remain the same. I love the sparkle of sterling silver wire and how old things - be they techniques, images, or objects - can be made new again. From knit wire to reused game pieces, I hope you will find something in my collection that you love as much as I do.

And here is her shop intro:

We're never too old to play, and my jewelry reflects that. Recycled game pieces, old comic books, and more go into each fun piece. Dice earrings, comic jewelry, and other playful pieces remind us that there is always time to play. Old and new, whimsy and beauty, go hand and hand in my earrings, pendants, and other jewelry. Many of my materials are reused in new and creative ways.

There are a lot of great items in Cynthia's shop, and I love how she is recycling old items into new and exciting pieces. I think one of the things I liked most about her work was how it was focused on written words.I am a sucker for anything that gives new life to old comics, books and magazines. These are a few of my favorites.
An update (finally!),and a 'Geek Girls Of Etsy' Spotlight Feature on: ELEMENTEES!

Summer is finally here! Almost! Here is the proof in my garden...

I do work through the summer, but my school load eases up for the summer for a couple of months and I am able to focus on fun stuff, like turning fabric strips like this:

into cool, summery pieces of jewelry like this bracelet:

I also have time to shop for fun findings. In this case,it is some jewelry that is going to be deconstructed down to parts, and then recycled into new pieces. I found these amazing ceramic beads at a favorite church thrift shop yesterday--total cost $1.00!

Also, at Saver's I found a huge bag of odds and ends with a lot of promising pieces in it. You can just see the potential!

Sam's favorite item in the bag--a Star Trek rank insignia!

I do love thrift shopping :)

Next up, let's get to our featured 'Geek Girls Of Etsy' Shop of the Day!
Today our spotlight falls on: ELEMENTEES
I love Catherine's tag line: Elementees: Tee shirts for the nerd in us all...
Here is a bit of Carherine's bio from her Etsy shop:

Hello and welcome to my shop. I am a stay at home mom who worked for years as an art director before having kids. Having been inspired to do artistic things since I was a child, I now draw inspiration from my husband and four kids. My oldest (a lover of science) came home from school one day and excitedly told me that you could spell cabbage using the periodic table. That got my creative juices flowing. I alphabetized the periodic table first and then sat with a dictionary to come up with as many fun words as possible. Next was coming up with images to compliment the words. Alas, I still am at a loss for a cabbage image. The results are in my shop, with new words and ideas developing all the time. Have a look and enjoy!

As a teacher myself, this was the first shirt that caught my eye...

(comes in 'Expresso', too, if you need extra energy!)

Today I am dedicating my blog to a feature on one of my favorite events--Free Comic Book Day!

Traditionally held the 1st Saturday in May(generally coinciding with the weekend of a big superhero movie release)FBCD kicked off in 2002 ,with the intent of drawing in new readers, calling back former readers and as a way of thanking current readers for their support. In the years since it has grown quite a bit. All the big publishers and many of the smaller press ones have contributed book in recent years. Even digital comics giant,Comixology was in on the action yesterday, promoting free books on their site.

I make no apologies,I love comics. That very 1st FCBD in 2002, I bundled my 1 year-old son into his car seat, buckled in my 10 year-old daughter, grabbed their dad and off we went in search of these free treasures.
These days it is my son and I who make the trek, but it is a fun annual mother-son activity that we look forward to each year.

These days the early bird catches the worm. Seriously, as word of FCBD has grown into an international event, the goodies go quick. Really quick. Last year we arrived at one store only an hour after opening to find everything gone already. This year we were prepared, arriving before our local Newbury Comics store opened. The lines grew down the plaza within minutes, and once again, when the doors opened the books flew off the shelves. People were courteous and patient. The comic book crowd is generally a pretty cool one. I was thrilled beyond belief the spot one copy of the book I was looking for. Luckily nobody else was.

Pippi Longstocking Color Special from Drawn & Quarterly

Newbury had a limit of 5 FCBD titles per customer. Retailers have to pay for these titles,so limiting is both fair and necessary. Between the two of us,these were the titles we chose.

Newbury Comics was also having a phenomenal sale. We left with all this for under $20!

$1.00 grab bags!

Graphic novels 25% off of the lowest price...couldn't resist!

We hit our next FCBD stop later, at New England Comics. Comics were limited to 2 new FCBD titles,2 older title freebies, and a free Tick comic. So again, 5. These were our picks together.

Sam breathed a sigh of relief when we found they still had the elusive FCBD Heroclix release (Iron Man 3) behind the counter.

So now we sit back, enjoy all the goodies from our travels and count down until next year's Free Comic Book Day!

Have a great day, and go read a comic book!
Sorry for the long break in between spotlights and blog posts. As they say, "life happened" and the last few months have been busy with off line life.

I am jumping around on my main spotlight sign-up list~just to keep things interesting. This way it will be a surprise each week to see what shop is being featured.

Up today is GameGuardians!
here is their shop intro:

"Pet dragons, wolves, gargoyles, chthulu, unicorns to guard your game. Don't have dice, cards, miniatures or chips? They are happy to guard whatever you treasure! Also work as unique gift baskets."

I have to admit, my son really was excited for me to feature this shop~the dice bag creatures are awesome, and so well priced

.
Here is a little bit of Laura's intro:

"I have been crafting for as long as I can remember. I dabble in everything from painting to miniatures, polymer clay, mosaics. I somehow always return to soft sculpture. designing my own unique patterns is a passion. In the words of Peppermint Patty from the Peanuts "I have to build this snowman. If I don't do it, no one else will, and he won't exist. I am his creator, and it is my duty to give him life! This snowman has a right to live! " That's how I feel about each of my creations."
new patina inks. Just paint on, let dry and wow!
Here are a few pictures of some metal charms I had here that I tried the patinas on.

The top piece is untreated. The second and third created rusted and verdigris effects. The effects I achieved were from layering and blotting lightly wih soft cloth. I went over the lettering with a .01 permanent art pen after to bring the letters back out.
The second charm I tried was one with that overly shiny silver plating on it. I lightly roughed up the surface with steel wool and added the inks. It came out much nicer looking than the original charm I think!
I definitely plan on adding to my color palette. The two sets I purchased were Rusted Hardware and Weathered Copper. The color is permanent, and Vintaj's also makes a sealer to add to that longevity.
